This section provides reference diagnostics and surveillance of clinically relevant human enterovirus, hepatitis A viruses, and human calicivirus infections in Canada. As a key component of Canada’s polio and acute flaccid paralysis surveillance program, the section is responsible for poliovirus identification.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently pushing hard to eradicate polio from the last few affected countries in the world. Even after eradication has been achieved, it will be essential that Canada maintains an adequate surveillance system for polio, to warn of possible re-emergence.
